Measurement Setup in the Amazon Rainforest

Amazon Tall Tower Observatory, Brazil

For this expedition I had the technical lead for the implementation of a climate measuring setup to measure different parameters (temperature, humidity, light intensity etc.) directly on different trees of the Amazon Rainforest, to get a better understanding of their microclimate and their overall contribution to the water cycling in whole South America. The sensor systems were connected to the central gateway via a LoRaWAN network, where the data was logged. All installed systems are located extremely remotely in the Amazon rainforest in areas without access to an internet connection. The data is therefore automatically stored on mobile data carriers. These can be exchanged at any time in order to access and analyze the data. This project helps to gain a better understanding of the contribution of cryptogamic communities to the overall water balance in the Amazon rainforest and throughout South America.
