Gas Measurements in Namibia and South Africa

Soebatsfontein, South Africa and Namib Rand Nature Reserve, Namibia

In the course of this field campaign I was responsible for the technical management and setup of a gas measuring station to gain a better understanding of the CO2 cycle in semi-arid regions. A system consisting of a CO2 meter, solenoid valves and a microcontroller was installed for several days in the semi-arid areas of the Succulent Karoo in South Africa. The solenoid valves were switched alternately at intervals in order to obtain measurements from different tubes connected to different measuring points. The data was logged in the microcontroller and could be read out wirelessly from a laptop via a local WLAN connection. A mobile climate station was installed to link the gas measurements with climate data such as temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation. In addition, remote sensing was performed to apply my self-developed segmentation models to enable biomonitoring of these areas.
